Consciousness Awesomeness with Molly McCord

Time For An Infusion of High Energy!

Take a minute (or five) for yourself and re-connect to your heart, your inner voice, your loving soul. In addition to meditating, these 7 steps may be just what you need right now. Grab a fresh cup of tea, sit with your feet on the floor, relax your neck, and here we go...

Step 1: Calm Your Racing Mind

Close your eyes.

Relax your heart. Breathe deep breaths.

Breathe in, count to 3. Breathe out, count to 3.

Breathe in, count to 5. Breathe out, count to 5.

Repeat 2 more times, or as often as needed.

{Stop looking at the computer screen! :) }

Step 2 : Visualize a Lovely Place

Close your eyes and mentally transport yourself to a better place.

A calmer environment. A relaxing spot that rejuvenates, lifts, forgets.

Pick a picture to focus on and create the environment in your head. The smells. Sights. Colors. Music. Joy. Calm.

Focus on the senses and feelings for 2 minutes.

{Why aren't your eyes closed?...}

Step 3: Laughter

Okay, time to officially open your eyes.

And how about some Church Bulletin Bloopers? These sentences actually appeared on church bulletins or were announced in church services. Laughter is (most likely) guaranteed!

*Prayer & Fasting Conference: "The cost for attending the Prayer and Fasting Conference includes meals."

*The sermon this morning: "Jesus Walks on the Water." The sermon tonight: "Searching for Jesus."

*Our youth basketball team is back in action Wednesday at 8 PM in the recreation hall. Come out and watch us kill Christ the King.

*Ladies, don't forget the rummage sale. It's a chance to get rid of those things not worth keeping around the house. Don't forget your husbands.

*The peacemaking meeting scheduled for today has been canceled due to a conflict.

*Remember in prayer the many who are sick of our community.

*Smile at someone who is hard to love. Say "Hell" to someone who doesn't care much about you.

*Don't let worry kill you off - let the Church help.

*Miss Charlene Mason sang "I will not pass this way again," giving obvious pleasure to the congregation.

*For those of you who have children and don't know it, we have a nursery downstairs.

*Next Thursday there will be tryouts for the choir. They need all the help they can get.

*Barbara remains in the hospital and needs blood donors for more transfusions. She is also having trouble sleeping and requests tapes of Pastor Jack's sermons.

*The Rector will preach his farewell message after which the choir will sing: "Break Forth Into Joy."

*Irving Benson and Jessie Carter were married on October 24 in the church. So ends a friendship that began in their school days.

*A bean supper will be held on Tuesday evening in the church hall. Music will follow.

*Low Self-esteem Support Group will meet Thursday at 7 PM. Please use the back door.

*The eighth-graders will be presenting Shakespeare's Hamlet in the Church basement Friday at 7 PM. The congregation is invited to attend this tragedy.

*Weight Watchers will meet at 7 PM at the First Presbyterian Church. Please use large double door at the side entrance.

*The Associate Minister unveiled the church's new campaign slogan last Sunday: "I Upped My Pledge - Up Yours."

Step 4: Determine the "Blesson"

What the heck is a "blesson"...

The word (created by writer Kari King) mixes the joy of a "blessing" with the reality of a "lesson". What a fabulous verbal creation - "a blesson!"

So consider.... what is going on today that can improve my outlook right now? What is trying to get my attention? What is in my power to change? What is the "blesson" in this bad day that I can consciously connect to? Hmmm....

Step 5: Exercise

The benefits of exercise are well-known (3 cheers for endorphins kicking in!). and the rewards can be a big mood changer If you can break away for a quick 15 minute walk (or hit the stairs in your building, or do a lap around the block), that will help move the energy through your body and lift your spirits.

But if it is not be the best time nor place to do any movements right now, then here is another option to help you continue Step 4 - more laughing. And yes, points will be handed out if you participate in these dance moves.

Step 6: Donate with Gratitude

Attempt to put it allll into perspective: there are millions suffering in so many ways on a daily basis.

Remember that even on your Very Worst Day, there are many who would consider your life (and today) to be filled with blessings, gifts, love and joy. And indeed, that’s true.

Although that perspective might escape you at the moment, donating to a good cause automatically creates something positive and connects you to a place of gratitude.

Take money that would normally be spent on a meal out with a friend, or an overpriced lipstick, or a fancy-schmancy cocktail and appetizer, and donate it to a worthy cause. 10 bucks, 20 bucks, 50 bucks - anything going to a charity is a worthwhile action. You may be without one more tube of MAC Lip Glass, but you’ll feel better knowing that you made the world a better place in just one day  despite enduring a personal rough patch.

Step 7: Lavender

With its relaxing qualities, lavender eases the mind and encourages deep breathing in order to inhale as much of its delicious scent as possible. And since lavender and deep breathing are both good for the brain, it's a win-win!

Fresh is best if you have it. But if not, grab some potent dried lavender flowers and put them in a vase by your computer, or wherever you spend a lot of time, so the bunch is easily accessible to both your eyes and nose.

Or, drop some lavender oil on a warm washcloth and put it on your chest, right below your chin, for as long as possible. Inhale deeply like you did in Step 1. And don't mind anyone who walks by, they don't exist right now.
